To use this custom-tapped Schedule 80 PVC nipple with your snap-action pressure switch, follow these assembly steps for a secure, leak-free connection:
1. Prepare the Threads
  • Inspect the PVC Hole: Ensure the 1/8" FNPT side port is clear of any PVC burrs or shavings from the tapping process.
  • Apply PTFE (Teflon) Tape: Wrap the 1/8" male threads of the pressure switch brass base with 2–3 layers of PTFE tape. Wrap in the clockwise direction (facing the end of the threads) so the tape doesn't unspool as you screw it in.
2. Manual Installation
  • Hand-Tighten First: Thread the switch into the side port by hand. Because PVC is softer than brass, it is very easy to cross-thread. It should turn smoothly for at least two full rotations before meeting resistance.
  • Wrench Tightening: Once hand-tight, use a small wrench on the brass hex base of the switch. Turn it an additional 1 to 1.5 turns.
    • Caution: Do not over-tighten. NPT threads are tapered and act like a wedge; over-tightening can easily crack the PVC pipe wall at the side port.
3. Orientation and Wiring
  • Final Position: If the switch needs to face a specific direction for your wiring, stop tightening once it reaches that orientation, provided it is sufficiently snug (at least one full turn past hand-tight).
  • Wiring Safety: Ensure the electrical terminals are protected from any moisture or potential leaks from the pipe. Use insulated spade connectors for the snap-action terminals.
4. Pressure Testing
  • Apply pressure slowly to the system and check for leaks at the side port using a soapy water solution. If bubbles appear, give the switch a small fraction of a turn (1/8th turn) until the leaking stops.
