Solar Stock Tank Deicer

Keep your livestock’s water moving during winter with our turnkey solar-powered stock tank aerator and deicer, designed for remote ranches, pastures, and livestock watering locations without access to utility power.

This system uses solar energy to power an air compressor that delivers air through a hose to a diffuser positioned near the bottom of your stock tank or livestock drinker. Rising air bubbles circulate the water and help maintain an open area in the ice, giving livestock access to drinking water during freezing weather.

An adjustable digital thermostat automatically controls the system based on temperature, helping reduce unnecessary operation and conserve battery power when conditions are warmer.

What’s Included

• Two 100-watt monocrystalline solar panels to generate power from sunlight.
• Solar panel pole-mount bracket designed for a 2-3/8-inch outside-diameter mounting pipe. Mounting pipe is not included.
• Air compressor to supply air for aeration.
• 20 feet of air hose to connect the compressor to the diffuser.
• Air diffuser to release bubbles near the bottom of the stock tank.
• Outdoor battery/equipment box to house and protect the system components.
• 100Ah battery to store energy for operation when sunlight is unavailable.
• Solar charge controller to regulate charging from the solar panels.
• Digital temperature controller with outlet to control operation based on temperature.
• DC-to-AC power inverter to supply AC power to the air compressor.
• Solar, battery, and inverter cables and wiring required for system connections.

System Design Note: We are currently testing a 12V air pump as a potential replacement for the AC aerator. If testing confirms satisfactory performance, we may substitute the 12V aerator for the AC unit, eliminating the need for the AC temperature controller and AC/DC inverter. This modification would simplify the system, reduce power losses, and improve overall energy efficiency while maintaining the same system price.

Note: The final equipment configuration will depend on successful testing and verification of performance.

How It Works

1. Solar Power

The solar panels convert sunlight into electricity to charge the battery and supply power to the system.

2. Battery Storage

The 100Ah battery stores energy for operation during nighttime and periods of reduced sunlight, subject to available charge and system demand.

3. Automatic Temperature Control

The digital thermostat switches the aeration system on and off according to its temperature settings, helping conserve stored energy when deicing is not needed.

4. Aeration and Deicing

The compressor pushes air through the hose to the diffuser at the bottom of the tank. The rising bubbles move water toward the surface, helping circulate relatively warmer bottom water and maintain an open area in the ice.

Important Information

Deicing performance depends on weather conditions, wind exposure, tank size and depth, diffuser placement, and available solar and battery power. The system is designed to help maintain an open area rather than guarantee that an entire tank will remain ice-free in all conditions.

For best results, install the diffuser near the bottom of the tank and position it to promote circulation without unnecessarily disturbing sediment. Battery runtime will vary with compressor power consumption, temperature-controller settings, sunlight, and battery condition.
